Kishtwar saffron growers demand better government deal | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 28 (KIP): While number of measures were being taken to promote saffron cultivation in a couple of pockets in the Kashmir valley the Government has simply earmarked Rs.3.22 crores for conservation of saffron in Kishtwar belt of Jammu region. Official sources said that the Government has earmarked Rs 3.22 crores for economic revival of saffron in mountainous Kishtiwar district in Jammu region during current financial year. Sources said that the saffron growing areas including the saffron development farm at Berwar and Poochal, an area of 20 hectares is envisaged for rejuvenation through provision of quality planting material. Against this the Government has cleared the plan for setting up spice park at Pampora, in south Kashmir, at a cost of Rs.373 crores. This step was aimed at providing a suitable market cover to the saffron cultivators and dealers and check sale of spurious saffron in the market. Since the area under saffron in the Kashmir valley has started shrinking rapidly because of poor yield and conversion of saffron belts into residential colonies the Government has decided to introduce several steps for promoting saffron cultivation. One such step is to provide sprinkle irrigation in certain areas. It is in this context that the Department of Horticulture plans to procure 200 millimeter diameter gravel packed production tube well by dual rotary or direct rotary method of drilling. The Department plans to install pumping units and other electrical installations on and around saffron belts. The project is envisaged to cost Rs.2.21 crores. The project is to be completed within six months. The Government plans to provide added financial assistance to the saffron growers so that they revive its cultivation. However, saffron cultivators in Kishtwar have demanded Government support for increasing area under saffron. They also demand that adequate marketing facilities be provided to them because Kishtwar area was not linked properly with the outside markets. They have said that Kishtwar saffron had sound market value and it was no inferior to the stuff being produced in Kashmir. They said if there was some deficiency in the quality of Kishtwar saffron it was the result of lack of Government incentive and technical support.
