Govt mulls to shift oil depots from Jammu Railway Station: Akhoon

SRINAGAR, JUNE 28: Keeping in view the safety of general public, the government is contemplating to shift oil depots from Railway Station Jammu to some other non populated areas like Birpur, Vijaypur or Sarore.
This was stated by the Minister for Transport and CA&PD Qamar Ali Akhoon while chairing State Transport Advisory Committee meeting held here today.
The Minister directed the Transport Commissioner to follow the process with oil companies in consultation with Disaster Management and Pollution Control Board Authorities so that immediate action could be taken for acquirement of land and shifting of oil depots.
During the meeting the Transport Commissioner informed the Committee about the action taken on the points raised in previous meeting and said that the department is discharging its legitimate duties for serving the people. He said that for the convenience of the common people single window system has been introduced in the office of RTO, Jammu.
The Committee directed the RTO Jammu for making tented arrangements for the people in RTO Complex till the permanent sheds are being constructed. RTO Kathua was asked to submit the periodical statement of the vehicles coming from out of state on weekly basis so that their stay period and routes of travelling in the state could be checked properly.
Addressing the meeting, Akhoon stressed on the functionaries of MVD and Traffic Departments to re-activate their functioning to monitor the movement of vehicles coming from out of state and ensure no such vehicle should interfere in local passenger services.
The Minister said government is aware of the problems being confronted by the transporters and is determined to solve these problems in phased manner.
In response to the demand for providing more parking slots and fly- overs in Jammu City, the Minister said that the matter is under active consideration of the government.
