LoC trade resumes, 39 vehicles cross sides | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, June 28: After a gap of about four weeks, the cross-Line of Control (LoC) trade resumed today with as many as 39 vehicles, carrying goods, crossed the sides. While 24 vehicles from this side crossed over to Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), only 15 vehicles arrived at Kaman post, the last Indian military post on this side of the LoC in Uri sector after crossing the Aman Setu. Trucks laden with goods for export to PoK reached at Salamabad Trade Facilitation Centre (TFC) on this side of the border in Uri sector, about 100 km from here in north Kashmir district of Baramulla yesterday after the trade resumed. The traders had yesterday announced to resume the trade after the state government assured them to improve the facilities, including taking up the matter of banking and communication with the centre. The traders alleged that state government had failed to provide them proper facilities. They were demanding, among other things, exempting cross-LoC trade from the purview of Value Added Tax (VAT), as they claimed that trade between this side and PoK should be treated as intra-state business. The other demands are expanding the list of items that can be traded, setting up of banking and communication facilities and construction of covered godowns at Salamabad. It is worthwhile to mention here that the traders had discontinued the trade in the month of May citing inadequate facilities. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during one of the ''Awami Mulakats'' assured a delegation of traders that their demands would be considered favourably. Meanwhile, the joint statement issued by the Indo-Pak Foreign Secretaries in Islamabad recently also mentioned revival of the working group on cross-LoC trade for looking into the possibility of increasing the number of trade days per week and providing banking and communication facilities to the traders.
