6/28/2011 10:03:10 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, June 28: Chief Secretary Madhav Lal has highlighted the need to implement the Court directions with regard to weeding out old and worn out vehicles.
Chairing a high level meeting of Transport Committee here today, Madhav Lal directed streamlining the transport system for the convenience of the public. The meeting observed that plying of unfit and old vehicles constitutes one of the major risks for road mishaps and decided to enforce compulsory fitness test on the vehicles over 15 years old.
The Committee stressed on rehabilitation of the transporters whose vehicles get weeded out by the implementation of the court directions. It was decided that such transporters would be preferentially facilitated in taking to alternate livelihood ventures under different employment schemes in vogue.
The Committee observed that passenger safety should be bench marked in all transport improvement measures.
