Politics takes back seat, social issues come to fore | Thank God, June is about to end | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 28: The `dreaded' month is about to end. Just two days more and June 2011 will be consigned to the history books. The calm that prevailed throughout the month has proved, yet again that Kashmiris are no mischief mongers. They too want trade, tourism and amity to flourish. The elements that predicted an agitation had to eat a humble pie. The month witnessed a change in the thinking of the separatist camp. They concentrated on social issues. The JKLF chairman, Yasin Malik was the first to break the `separatist jinx'. He raised his voice against female feticide. The Mirwaiz and even Geelani followed suit. Increased drug addiction and waywardness were other issues that the separatists addressed. Some of them even talked about environmental preservation and promotion of tourism. Geelani urged the people to treat tourists as guests. He also told the traders to refrain from selling duplicate articles to the tourists. Surprisingly the month witnessed only one strike on June 11. The strike was called by Syed Ali Geelani to observe the death anniversary of Tufail Matto whose killing triggered what is now called as summer unrest. The bygone months were comparatively hotter (politically) than June. Geelani even threatened another agitation over the Dogra Certificate row when the Legislative Assembly was in session. Politics has taken a back seat. While the people stay `cool' and calm, mercury is the only thing that soars with every passing day. But who cares about weather in Kashmir? |
