BJP does U-turn on militants' rehabilitation policy | | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 29: Are the BJP, the NC and the PDP on the same page? Yes, it appears so. The stand the BJP took yesterday on the rehabilitation of the Pakistan-based hardcore terrorists and militants of Kashmiri origin leaves none in any doubt that BJP has taken a complete U-turn on the issue, thus sending a clear signal that there is no fundamental difference between it and the Kashmir-based political parties. This, notwithstanding the fact that the BJP also talked about the "unemployed youth of Jammu and Kashmir." The BJP yesterday said: "It is not opposed to the rehabilitation of former militants." This is perhaps for the first time that the BJP has taken such a stand on the militants. Hitherto, it used to oppose it tooth and nail saying the return from Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Jammu and Kashmir of militants of Kashmir origin and their rehabilitation in the state would jeopardize the national interests and give a more deadly and violent orientation to the ongoing secessionist and communal violence in the state in general and Kashmir in particular. The stand of the BJP was that the entry of militants into Kashmir and other parts of India would constitute a major threat to the national security and territorial integrity of India. That the BJP has now reversed its stand and spoken in the language of the NC and the PDP does indicate some understanding between the BJP and the Kashmir-based parties. As for the reaction of the general public to the stand taken by the BJP, everyone has expressed a grave concern and opined that "the BJP, instead of reforming itself taking into consideration what the BJP MLAs did during the Rajya Sabha elections and the just-held Legislative Council elections, has adopted a line that would render it totally irrelevant in the Jammu province." Most of those whom this scribe met to ascertain their views on the BJP's stand on the rehabilitation policy were one saying the "BJP is itself preparing the ground for its political demise, thus giving a god-sent opportunity to the otherwise very unpopular Congress party in the state to capture the political space the BJP occupied not-so-long-ago." There was an agreement on one count and that was this that the "militants are returning to the state with a mission aimed at furthering the cause of Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir." However, what was most significant was the reaction of some of those who still matter in the BJP to what they called a "complete U-turn." They expressed their disgust over what they also called the "change of heart on the part of the BJP" and described the latest stand of the party on the rehabilitation policy as "a last nail in the BJP's coffin." Of course, they shared their views on the condition of anonymity. If one goes by the reaction of general public and some of the BJP leaders, then one can easily say that the BJP has landed itself into a major controversy. Not a good development for the party, for Jammu province, for the state and for the country. |
