Keeping a promise-Omar's style | | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 29: The Chief Minister Yesterday left an assembly of villagers at Beerwah in Budgam district shocked when he preferred to walk away from a function over making a `false' commitment. Omar's colleagues had managed a good assembly by promising the gullible villagers district status for Beerwah. Omar later wrote on social networking website Tweeter that his politics was based on truth. "I do not make false commitments", he said. The Chief Minister has won many admirers across the globe during the past three years. They appreciated Omar for his fairness and boldness. However, there are people who took Omar's comments with a pinch of salt. According to them, Omar promised a clean administration the day he assumed office of the Chief Minister. But, when Papa wanted his tainted buddy's rehabilitation, Omar had to oblige. Omar could not also remove dead wood from the administration. In 2009 Omar also promised repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). "The law will go this year", he assured. However, when Omar was told to behave like a `good boy' by New Delhi, Omar did not dare to face the people. His law minister issued a statement saying AFSPA was needed for the time being. His colleague stated in the Legislative Assembly that AFSPA was needed for strengthening democracy in the state. Omar also promised `zero tolerance' on human rights. Expecting Omar to fulfil this promise is too much. How can he punish the army and para-military forces when AFSPA is in operation? Omar knows AFSPA is not applicable to the local police but it is not in the interest of administration to punish a police man. People have to appreciate Omar's problems. He has limitations as well. Omar is a politician and like other politicians he can lay down your life for the sake of his nation. Keeping a promise is good but when it comes to running a strife torn state, promises cannot be fulfilled. |
