It is now official: Omar to be CM for full term | | | Early Times Report NEW DELHI, June 29: It is now official. Omar Abdullah will continue to be the Chief Minister of J&K state for next three years as well, putting all speculations within Congress to rest. The word has now come from none other than the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh who authenticated it by giving reference of the 'decision' already taken by the Congress President Sonia Gandhi under an 'arrangement' arrived at the time of forming coalition government in the state. The Prime Minister was responding to a question during his interaction with senior editors at Union capital asked in context of some voices in the local Congress leadership with regard to rotational Chief Ministership in the NC led coalition regime at present. But his statement has sent waves of disappointment among various levels in the J&K unit of Congress, especially those who were clamoring over the issue very often. However, in keeping with the 'traditions' of Congress reflecting loyality at its best, almost all the leaders who were until recently vocal about the issue and jubilant that a 'debate' has begun on the rotational CM demand which will conclude in Congress favour, today said 'it is acceptable because it has come from Sonia Ji…' Omar Abdullah will serve his full term of six years as Chief Minister of J&K, Prime Minister declared. "We had an arrangement with Omar Abdullah. The Congress President made clear to him that he will serve his full term of six years. I am not aware of any decision to reverse that decision," he said at this interaction with a group of editors. Even though the statement of the Prime Minister is seen as silencing the loud cry made by some leaders of the party in the state was expected to put a lid on the moves in the state in a bid to gain support for a rotational chief minister, this has only caused discomfiture in some ranks and at the level of workers who were almost given to believe by these leaders that the seat of power would be transferred in favor of Congress soon after Omar completes his three years in office as Chief Minister in January next year. "It has now been endorsed by the Prime Minister that Omar Abdullah will continue to be the Chief Minister…..Congress leadership has to accept this decision but Omar led government must also deliver on the lines of the expectations people cherish…….we only appeal to plug the gaps wherever they are within the coalition so that it works in complete tandem ………it has to be a real coalition in complete coordination at least on issues concerning people at large…", said former Minister and senior Congress leader Jugal Kishore Sharma. "We have to abide by the decision of high command as soldiers…..whatever it is, it has to be acceptable to the rank and file of Congress……..if they think coalition is running smoothly and the decision will further cement the bonds, then it is in ritht direction", said a senior leader from Kashmir, who ironically was most vocal about rotational CM issue said wishing not be named now while giving this comment. |
