6/30/2011 10:42:51 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, June 30 :-As far as the shortage of teachers in Government schools is concerned the district of Jammu is on the top with about 1600 posts of teachers, including 130 Masters 50 lecturers and 210 RET teachers, vacant out of sanctioned 9,000 posts.
Official sources said that while on one hand the enrollment in Government schools has increased and in Jammu district there are about 1.12 lakh students studying in the Government schools, on the other hand shortage of teachers has affected teaching and other academic activities.
Sources said that there were about 16,000 posts of teachers vacant in various Government schools in the entire state.Part of the vacancies is the result of large number of teachers having been kept as attached either in Srinagar or Jammu cities or at the district headquarters. The result was that in a large number of Government schools in remote rural areas was 25 per of the total sanctioned posts.
Senior functionaries of the Department of Education said that the matter of shortage of teachers has been brought to the notice of the Minister for school education, Peerzad Mohd.Syed has instructed the education authorities at the district and the provincial level to refer vacant posts to the subordinate services selection Board.
They said all possible steps were being taken to fill all the vacant posts within one year depending on the selection process the Board will adopt and complete.
The sources said that there is a plan to fill about 35 per cent vacant posts by recruiting educated youths under the Rehbr-i-Taleem scheme.
They said that Peerzada has instructed the senior officers of his department to monitor the academic activities in all Government run schools by visiting each school in the state. A report has reached the Government in which a large number of teachers have resented the way they were being forced to conduct additional classes because of shortage of teachers.
Reports said that in various schools in remote rural areas each teacher had to hold two to three additional classes everyday.Experts have suggested that each school should have two to five per cent more teachers than the sanctioned strength because that would help
students during the time some of the teachers were on leave. It has been seen that if three out of 30 teachers in a high school are on leave there is no teacher available for holding additional classes.
