EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 30: While localities across Jammu city are facing acute water crisis, about 49 tube wells dug by the Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) for the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department are not functioning, as they have developed electro-mechanical faults.
Sources said that due to this, PHE department has refused to take possession of these tube wells, which has affected the supply system in the city, which supports 13 lakh souls plus the floating pilgrim population, who visit Mata Vaishno Devi shrine.
It is pertinent to mention here that the state government has given the construction of number projects to create infrastructure for the water supply keeping in view the increasing demand in recent years, but many of these have been not found up to the mark, due to corruption at various levels.
A senior officer from PHE said that the technical snag during operation of the sources was a major bottleneck in streamlining the water supply in the city. He said it is unfortunate that these assets have become useless for which the government has spent crores of rupees in past few years.
“Department was never happy with the work of the ERA in the execution of the projects. The case is not only of 49 sets, but nearly 70 tube wells have already been dug by the agency which is also facing major and minor faults”, said the official.
He said that because of the repeated breakdowns, the establishments need constant maintenance which means shutting down these for days together and affecting the supply system in different localities.
At the moment, city faces the shortage of 3 MGL (30 lakh gallons) per day despite spending crores in recent past to upgrade the water system.
“People of many localities have to be dependent on tankers for the water supply especially when all the natural water sources are drying up,” he added.
Chief Engineer PHE, BR Dogra admitted that these tube wells have developed some problems and also erratic electricity supply is affecting PHE’s work. He also pointed out that due to long power cuts the at times did not allow full functioning of the water pumps which draw water from the ground sources.
He elaborated that nearly 40 tube wells have been completed and handed over but connectivity of many of them are still incomplete. He disclosed that less than fifty percent of this connectivity job has been performed.
“We are trying our level best to ensure supply system is streamlines so that people don’t have to face any problem in coming months”, Dogra said.
