Harassment IED destroyed at Boulevard hotel
6/30/2011 11:53:28 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, JUNE 30 : Police today seized three kilogram explosive material from the compound of J&K Tourism Development Corporation's hotel Heemaal at the tourist hub of Boulevard near Dalgate.
SSP Srinagar, Syed Ashiq Hussain Bukhari, told Early Times that someone had managed to carry the explosive material in a polythene bag and dropped it on the compound of Hotel Heemaal. However, Police rushed to the spot with bomb disposal squad immediately after receiving the tip off and seized the unfabricated explosive device.
Bukhari said that the suspected object turned out to be around three kg of loose explosive material. It had no detonator but a couple of loose wires and dead dry batteries. According to him, there was no possibility of explosion as the IED had not been fabricated. "It seemed to be an attempt to cause harassment to over a hundred government employees of Jammu division who are posted here with Move offices and are staying at Heemaal", SSP said. He said that Police were also investigating whether it was an attempt to scare away customers of three wine shops set up on the ground floor of the hotel block outside.
SSP said that BDS destroyed the object successfully. It caused a minor blast but none of the tourists or Move employees looked under fear.
Boulevard, on the banks of world famous Dal lake, has been bustling with huge tourist rush. There are hundreds of shops, handicraft showrooms, hotels and restaurants on the 1.5 Km strip from Dalgate to Nehru Park.
Nearly 5,50,000 tourists have visited Kashmir valley this season since the beginning of January 2011. This is a record in last four years. With nearly 25 flights landing every day at Srinagar Airport and thousands more tourists reaching here through Jammu-Srinagar national highway, Dellhi-Srinagar air tickets have been selling in the best range of Rs 8,000 to Rs 18,000 each. None of the tourists has been harassed, kidnapped, killed or harmed by other means this year.
