Congress machinations can't be trusted | | | Prime Minister,Manmohan Singh, has sealed the lid over the moves for a change in guard in Jammu and Kashmir when on Wednesday he said that Omar Abdullah will complete full six-year term as Chief Minister. For the National Conference it is good news. For Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah,it is not only an apetising news but a victory over those in the congress who have been demanding rotational chief ministership. When a few days ago Omar Abdullah had, after a meeting with Manmohan Singh, stated that the Prime Minister had assured him that he (Omar) would be allowed to occupy Chief Minister's chair for six years not many in the congress believed him because there was neither any confirmation nor denial from the PMO.But Manmohan Singh has himself removed certain doubts and this should be a matter of joy for the National Conference leadership.Well there is no const itutional compulsions on the part of the centre to opt for a change of guard when at the time of casting its dice in favour of Omar Abdullah in 2008 it had been agreed that the 2002-2008 experiment will not be repeated when for first three years Mufti Sayeed headed the Government and for the remaining three years Ghulam Nabi Azad occupied chief Minister's chair. Notwithstanding the hottest ever summer months in 2010,in which 118 civilians were killed in police action during unprecedented civilian strife, the state has not witnessed any major upheaval or any law and order problem which would warrant change of guard. In fact the security and political situation has considerably improved which was reflected in the just concluded incident free Panchayat elections. If not for anything else Omar Abdullah deserved appreciation over the way nearly 80 per cent people participated in the Panchayat polls thereby rejecting the call for poll boycott given by the separatists. At the same time security and political atmosphere are usually as undependable as a whore. You can never foresee what turn politics or security may take. There have been occasions in India when even the mighty chief Ministers of the stature of Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad,Pratap Singh Kairon, had to be dropped on one pretext or the other. And if one reads between the lines the political machinations on the part of the Congress one may not hesitate saying that what the Congress pronounces it implements the opposite of it.Under a well formulated agreement between Sheikh Abdullah and Indira Gandhi in 1975,which enabled the Sheikh to regain power after 22 years' of political wilderness,Congress was supposed to support the Government led by the Sheikh.Sheikh Abdullah was sworn in as Chief Minister he inducted among others Mirza Afzal Beg,D.D.Thakur,Sonam Narboo and,Mohan Kishen Tikoo in the cabinet he headed. The Congress supported him from outside.Since the Sheikh and his party had not yet contested the elections his Government had to bank on Congress support for survival. At that stage it had been presumed that the arrangement will continue for six years but within lest then two years the Congress withdrew its support. This way Omar needs to read history before he starts celebrating Manmohan Singh's statement. The Congress that hammered out an agreement called Sheikh-Indira Accord was the same congress that withdraw its support forcing the state to be placed under the Governor's rule to be followed by fresh elections.
