State’s biggest upcoming library project in Srinagar to complete in a year | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar July 1: State’s biggest project in public library sector coming up on the Maulana Azad Road here will complete in a year. The Rs. 17.34 crore multi-storied building for the SPS Central Library, presently housed in the backside of the old museum building at Lal Mandi will, on completion, meet the demand and requirement of the ever increasing reading community in Kashmir. Minister for Tourism & Culture, Nawang Rigzin Jora accompanied by Minister of State for Home, Tourism, Culture, Housing & Urban Development and PHE, Nasir Aslam Wani today visited the project site and took stock of the ongoing construction. Director Libraries & Research, Khalid Bashir Ahmad was also present. The Ministers fixed the timeline for completion of the project as July 2012. They asked the project executing agency, JKPCC, to speed up work in double shift and complete the project by that time. They also emphasized on local aesthetics in the design of the building and called for change, if necessary, in the design to ensure that the complex gelled well with the environment and traditional architecture of Kashmir. Both. Jora and Nasir were of the opinion that the project on completion would serve as an important academic centre of the Valley and they would make all out efforts to mobilize special dispensation of funds for its early completion. The upcoming building, besides housing the Kashmir’s oldest public library established in the year 1898, will have an art gallery, fire-proof blocks for one of the richest manuscripts collection in Asia, café, exhibition cum art centre, researchers’ cabins and children’s section. The plinth area of the building is 7020 sq ft with a total built-up area of 55,134 sq ft. The basement of the building will be used for car parking with a capacity of 25 vehicles. It may be pertinent to recall that setting up of public libraries in Jammu & Kashmir dates back to 133 years when the SRS Library was established at Jammu in 1879. Nineteen years later, Kashmir’s first public library was set up at Lal Mandi.
