Chenab level safer till now, Govt establishes special cell to monitor situation
7/2/2011 2:18:11 AM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, July 1: With Jammu expected to receive above normal monsoon this year, Irrigation department has established a special cell to monitor the water level in mighty Chenab river.
Officials said that though so far the level is under the danger mark, but with Jammu expected to receive above normal rainfall this season, department is leaving no stone unturned to save the low lying areas from floods as it has become a major challenge for the government.
Keeping in view last year’s flood where Chenab overflowed due to the continuous three day of incessant rain officials have also urged the people to remain vigilant so that in case of sudden flooding, they don’t face any problem.
It is pertinent to mention here that in past few years many of the low lying areas in Akhnoor, Palhawala and other areas get flooded, leading to destruction of crops and property.
“We don’t want to take any chance this year as for past few years we are surprised by the sudden rise in the water. We have made plans which include constant monitoring, checking the bandhs and stocking the sand bags in case there is any breach”, said a official.
Surinder Sharma- a local said that as water levels in the Chenab River continue to rise steadily, people living in the vicinity of the river become worried.
He said that last year also the river reached the danger mark in no time and this year due to continuous rains locals are again worried of the same situation.
Another resident Nandita Devi said “If the situation remains like this then they will have no other choice but to migrate to safer areas but this time the department has decided to make them worry free so let us see what happens.”
Another local said that this is not the first time that the government is deciding to help the people every year they make these decisions and at the time of floods no one is seen.
When contacted Chief Engineer ICFD Satish Kumar said that the present water level of Chenab is normal but in future the continuous rains can increase the level. He added that they are fully prepared to prevent the floods and have made themselves ready for the rescue operations in different rivers.
