Need for deploying additional security forces on rail tracks in Kashmir: Experts
7/2/2011 2:33:59 AM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, July 1:
With increase in the passenger traffic on Qazigund-Baramullah and Qazigund-Budgam railways services in the Kashmir valley the need for further strengthening the security cover has been felt by the state authorities.
Official sources said that a majority of people in the valley have shown keen interest in traveling by trains because the journey is faster than the bus services and it is cheaper.
They said with increase in the passenger rush there was need for providing security cover to the railway stations and the track

Sources said that during the civilian strife besides two railway stations at Sopore and Budgam rail track too had been damaged by the protesters.
It took the Railways authorities over three months to restore rail traffic on Sopore-Baramulla route.
Senior officers of security forces said that besides deploying additional companies of police and paramilitary forces on and around all the railway stations and platforms from Qazigund to Budgam and from Qazigund to Baramulla there was need for strengthening the railway patrol parties whose men would ensure that the subversives were not able to cause any damage to the tracks.
They said before the Katra-Qazigund rail link was opened the valley needs at least 30 additional companies of police and paramimilitary forces for providing security cover to the rail passengers, track and the platforms.
The officers said that once the r ail route was opened between Qazigund and Katra thereby linking the valley with rest of the country the route between Katra and Banihal and between Nagrota and Katra were quite sensitive demanding bigger deployment security forces.
A senior police officer suggested that more X-ray machines and CCTVs be installed at the railway stations and platforms between Qazigund and Baramulla.
He also suggested installation of CCTVs at some half a dozen sensitive places including Sopore and Khanabal.
