People of MP, Bihar reject outright the Congress | Jammu Waiting For Opportunity | | MINCING NO WORDS -- I NEHA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 1: The support-base of the Congress is shrinking across the country and shrinking very fast. People are turning towards other parties. The Congress has become so unpopular. The outcome of the assembly elections in the five state of Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Puducheery, Kerala and Assam, held in April-May this year, indicated the people’s no confidence in and contempt for the Congress. The Congress was completely wiped out both in Tamil Nadu and Puducheery. In West Bengal, Congress could capture some odd 50 seats. Courtesy: Mamta Bannerjee and her Trinamool Congress. In Kerala, the Congress scored victory over the Left by just a couple of seats. It was expecting a landslide victory. It just got .o5 per cent more votes as compared to the Left Front. The Left Front lost because the CPI-M general secretary bungled. The Congress won the election in Kerala technically but lost very badly politically. In Assam, the Congress did perform exceedingly well and returned to power third time in a row not because it was popular but because of local factors, the fractured opposition and the Muslim factor. Along with these assembly elections in five states, by-elections were also held in five other states, including Andhra Pradesh (AP), Karnataka, Chhatisgarh, Nagaland and Uttar Pradesh. The Congress lost all the 8 seats it contested in these states. The Congress lost certain seats it had never lost. The nation also witnessed by-elections in two major states of the country – Madhya Pradesh (MP) and Bihar – four days ago. MP and Bihar return to the Lok Sabha almost 20 per cent members out of a total of 543. Two seats were involved. In MP, the BJP candidate inflicted a crushing defeat on the Congress candidate in the Jabera assembly constituency. He won by a huge margin of 11,738 votes. And, in Bihar, the BJP candidate inflicted a humiliating defeat on the Congress candidate in the Purnia assembly constituency. The BJP candidate defeated the Congress candidate by a huge margin of over 22,000 votes. The victory of the non-Congress candidates in these states does give an indication that the people have by and large turned away from the Congress. The Congress is also not better placed in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Orissa, Jharkhand, Uttranchal, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and so on. There are potent reasons to believe that the people of these states would defeat the Congress as and when elections to the assemblies in these states are held. The story of the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir is no different. Like elsewhere in the country, in Jammu and Kashmir as well, the Congress is losing ground by the day. The reasons are not just the involvement of the Congress and the UPA government in the multi-crore scams, spiraling prices, corruption on an unprecedented scale, disconnect between the party and the people, the Congress’ arrogance and dictatorial attitude and its appeasement policies, but also because the Congress in the state in general and Jammu province in particular has failed to come up to the people’s expectations. In Kashmir, the Congress is no more than a replica of the anti-Jammu National Conference. Most of the Congress leaders in Kashmir and almost all the Congress ministers hailing from Kashmir are speaking the language of the National Conference. So much so that some of the ministers are openly opposing those demanding the installation of some Congress leader as chief minister after Omar Abdullah completes three years in office saying the present arrangement would not be allowed to be disturbed.
