High risk transplant performed at SKIMS | | | Early Times Report Srinagar June 24 : A team of doctors of the Department of Medical Oncology, SKIMS transplanted a high risk patient diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma Stage III (Bone Marrow Cancer). This is the second consecutive patient treated for such malignancy by the department. The patient Bhat Najeeb Ahmad was treated with cyclical combination chemotherapy and Autologous peripheral stem cell transplant (PBSCT). The Director SKIMS, Prof. S. A. Zargar, appreciated the skills of Prof. Mushtaq Ahmad, Prof. Sheikh Aejaz Aziz, Dr. Abdul Rashid Department of Medical Oncology and Dr. Fehmeeda, Department of Blood Transfusion and Immunoheamatology for their efforts in making this program success. Najeeb was known case of multiple myeloma (Bone Marrow Cancer) for many years and was on conventional chemotherapy. Meanwhile the patient stopped responding to chemotherapy and was taken for the most viable treatment of stem cell transplant on 6th June 2011 after proper evaluation by doctors. The procedure involves destruction of bone marrow cells with high dose of chemotherapy followed by injection of cells after 24 hours. As a result new cells re-grow and produce normal cells curing carcinoma. The doctors informed that procedure cost involves Rs. two lacs, whereas outside state it costs approximately Rs 6-8 lacs. The procedure besides being economical is also convenient for poor patients who can’t afford such procedures outside the State. It is as such observed that the government of J&K should assist such patients who are not able to undergo such sophisticated treatment for financial constraints. Director SKIMS said that.
