J&K RTI Movement concerned over attacks on RTI Applicants | ‘Demands action against the officials involved’ Early times Report | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 2: J&K RTI Movement has shown its resentment over increasing attacks and harassment of applicants who want to access information various Government departments under Right to Information Act (RTI). Since last three weeks as many as four RTI applicants have been beaten, threatened and even arrested for seeking information under J&K RTI Act 2009. One RTI applicant Sirajudin Salam and his friend were manhandled by the officials of Municipal Council Baramulla when they went to collect information regarding beneficiaries of Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (IHSDP) of Baramulla town. Sirajudin Salam who is associated with J&K RTI Movement has sought details of the gazette officers who gave income certificates to the people who applied for getting money under IHSDP and also sought details of the persons who have been provided such money. Siraj alleges that most of the IHSDP beneficiaries do not live under below poverty line (BPL) category and many Government employees of Municipal Committee Baramulla have obtained fake income certificates from various gazette officers in order to get the money which ranges from eighty five thousand to one lack. When he went to collect the information yesterday the officials of Municipal Council Baramulla manhandled them and beat them ruthlessly. In another case an RTI applicant Mohammaed Afzal Bhat was handed over to police by Government Medical College authorities when he was called by the Public Information Officer to collect the information few days back. Similarly three weeks back an RTI applicant Abdul Waheed of Shalateng Srinagar was threatened with dire consequences by the officials of SIDCO where Waheed had filed application under RTI Act to seek details of allotment of Plywood plants in Industrial Estate Zainakot. We have been requesting the authorities including Chief Minister, Chief Information Commissioner, Home Secretary and DG Police to establish a separate hotline to tackle with such cases but till date . “All of us know that many RTI Activists have been killed across India and our authorities must not wait to see same thing happens here. We also demand action against all the officers involved in harassment of RTI applicants, Dr Muzaffar added.
