Congress 'grouse' over sanction of 22 new colleges | Doda MLA cries foul, says only 'blue eyed politicians pleased' | | Early Times Report jammu, July 2: All is again not well between the coalition partners , this time the issue of new colleges becoming cause of contention and grouse within Congress against the ruling NC. From more than one area in Jammu region, Congress leaders feel disgruntled about the recent decision of the government in according sanction to 22 new colleges, alleging the selection of the places shows it has been done to please blue eyed politicians. Congress leaders also feel neglected in the matter contending the party has not been consulted while making selection of the places which are entitled to creation of new colleges. Last over two days witnessed whispers within some Congress leaders of Jammu who feel their areas have been overlooked by the government in granting colleges, despite the fact these deserve so on more than one count. While the Congress leaders from Billawar, Basohli and even Bani have been expressing this grouse in close quarters and the resentment so is being expressed in whisphers, Doda MLA and former minister of Congress Abdul Majid Wani, also disappointed on this issue, today said in explicit and clear terms that government has adopted a prejudiced and discriminative approach in selecting locations for setting up 22 new Degree colleges in the state. Contending that genuine aspirations and claims of people of Doda constituency have been fully ignored by the Higher Education Minister Abdul Gani Malik. Dismissing the claims of Education Minister that the areas chosen for opening of 22 new degree colleges have been selected on the basis of a comprehensive survey keeping in view genuineness and geographical educational backwardness of the area, Wani said this contention is totally far away from the actual reality. "In fact, few blue-eyed politicians have only been pleased.........", the Congress leader from Doda said adding," It was expected from the Higher Education Minister of J&K that justice shall be met to chronically backward areas; socially and educationally backward areas shall be given priority while taking decision about location of these new degree colleges in the state. Abdul Majid Wani also made grave accusation instead of paying attention to backward areas most of the members of J&K council of ministers have been pleased by sanctioning of new degree colleges in their constituencies. Disgruntled, Doda MLA has also questioned and argued that it was even acknowledged by Omar Abdullah Chief Minister and Abdul Rahim Rather the Finance Minister of J&K state during last budget session of J&K Legislative Assembly, Doda remained the most backward district of J&K state with regard to education, road connectivity, poverty, employment, agriculture and industrial growth. Strongly contending that Doda deserved a new college, Wani explained that for approximately three lakh people from four blocks of Doda constituency there is only one Government Degree College that too located at Doda District Head Quarter. Because of inadequate educational infrastructure in Doda constituency, average literacy rate is quite low, less than 47%, he said in the statement given to media. Wani further said that due to social constraints most of the female students, especially from rural areas, do not seek admission in degree college Doda which is having Co-Ed facility. " On this count again they remain deprived of the higher education". The Congress leader also reminded the government that during the last meeting of District Development Board of Doda chaired by Omar Abdullah Honorable Chief Minister, it was proposed that the new Government Degree College for Women shall start functioning from building complex of Higher Secondary School (Boys) Doda city which shall be relocated. But the orders in this regard are still awaited, he lamented adding that poor people from rural and distant areas desist to send their children for education purpose to the only degree college located at Doda district Head Quarters, due to economic reasons. In the backdrop of these contentions, Wani has urged Omar Abdullah the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, who is also leader of the coalition government to review the decision taken regarding location of 22 newly approved colleges maintaining this would only provide justice, equality and pragmatism. |
