Unrest in Islamia College as Principal gets two successive extensions
7/2/2011 11:26:30 PM
Early Times Report
srinagar, July 2: There is a brewing resentment among the teaching staff of Islamia College of Science and Commerce situated in the down-town area of Capital city against the grant of two time extensions to the Principal of the college marring the prospectus of other deserving faculty members aspiring for this prestigious post over the years.
According to sources some of the deserving college professors who were in the penal for the promotions even attained their superannuation but the present Principal of the College who is a blue eyed boy of higher ups in Government continues to get one extension after the another. Though granting of extensions has been against the policy of the Government, the principal of the college has been given two extensions so far and he is trying for the third one which his bosses have also promised to grant him third extension this time.
Protesting against the decision of the Government and opposing grant of extension after extension to principal, recently a delegation of professors from the College called on Chief Minister who is also the chairman of the Islamia College Governing Board and apprised him of all such developments in the college. The Chief Minister in his remarks assured the team of an appropriate action to restore the glory of the prestigious college.
The delegation has apprised the CM about the drawbacks of granting such extensions to the principal which has marred the prospects of all the promising professors who were aspiring for the post for years together. They informed Abdullah that the college which has a glorious history for presenting an educational model at the local and the state level is moving out of scene because of its present state of affairs.
The sources in and around the college told this reporter that academics stand no where in the priority list of the college administration. This has resulted in the decline of the moral and academic standards at the college.
Sources said the college Principal who presents himself in the close association with bureaucratic and political set up of the state has already been given two extensions since his superannuation in August 2009. This resulted in malpractices, like corruption, illegal appointments, misappropriation of funds and above all non -academic atmosphere at the campus.
Earlier the principal in his letter No: ICS/1012/M/3 dated 28/6/2008 directed the college community not to place any proposal for extension of service but managed to get two successive extensions for himself.
During his tenure he employed 50 helpers who are on the pay rolls of the college but serve as domestic servants with various bureaucrats including the present Commissioner, Secretary Higher Education.
