Omar finally has the cake | Can he eat it as well? | | Early Times Report jammu, July 2: Since the past six months, the priorities of National Conference (NC) seem to have changed. The ruling party no longer talks about autonomy. All the statements issued during the said period revolved around Omar Abdullah's term and NC's relation with its coalition partner. Although the Congress party has agreed that Omar shall hold office for six years, the recent statements of some senior Congress leaders have created a stir in the National Conference. It seems, the Chief Minister and his Papa have succeeded in persuading the Prime Minister to issue a statement favouring a full term for Omar. The Prime Minister issued the statement early this week. He also said that the decision had been taken by the Congress High Command. Omar felt relieved. But as they say there are no permanent friends or foes in politics, nothing can be predicted at this point of time. However, the talk of a change of guard after three years forced the National Conference abandon its autonomy plan for the time being. Last year when Justice (retd) Sageer submitted his recommendations, the NC felt on top of the world. Although the retired judge made a passing reference of autonomy, the NC felt vindicated. From that day, the NC talked extensively about its autonomy document. But in the recent past two important developments took place in quick succession. A senior Congress leader from Jammu publicly said that the Chief Ministerial berth must be given to a Congress man after the coalition completes three years in office. He gave his reasons for the change. A few days earlier, New Delhi's nominated interlocutors on Jammu Kashmir stated that they saw a better option (than autonomy) in Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) Self rule document. Dr Karan Singh and Fotedar's overtures only added to NC's woes. These developments, it seems, have dampened NC's spirits. The impact of these developments can be gauged from Dr Mustafa Kamal's statements. He praised the Congress and said NC-Congress relation had roots in history. Surprisingly Kamal lashed out at Congress last year. A scared Dr Farooq Abdullah tried to do some damage control in his usual and unique humorous style. He said: "It is my father's fault that Mustafa Kamal happens to be my brother. I have been telling him not to issue such reckless statements." For the time being the clouds of uncertainty that loomed large over Omar's chief ministership are over but in politics if one has the cake, he can never be sure of eating it as well. |
