Visit to World Bank aided project concludes | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, July 3: A team 35 officers/ officials of J&K Soil Conservation Department, who left Jammu for a tour to Himachal Pradesh and adjoining states on June, 29 returned back to the state on July, 2 after successfully completing their maiden training cum exposure visit. During this 4-days tour, the team visited areas like Banikhet, Chowari, Khajjiar, Jot , Nurpur, Dharmshala , Kangra etc. and were exposed to Soil & Water Conservation works , Makowal water conservation structures, watershed development management and livelihood enhancement efforts of the World Bank Aided Mid- Himalayan Project of Himachal Pradesh Forest Department, wherein besides establishing 203 kms of irrigational channels , a total of 8454 water harvesting structures have been constructed with pondage area of 536938 CuM & benefitting 33236 families . In addition to this , the visiting officials were also exposed to new initiatives of the project activities like holistic treatment of catchment areas, maintenance of plantation works through user groups , livelihood enhancement activities like flower/ vegetable cultivation, innovative ginger cultivation, farm bio-diversity conservation & promotion of local varieties, organic farming/ vermi-compost, strengthening of SHG’s and other works undertaken with convergence with allied departments.
During the said visit, the team of Soil Conservation Department also visited the Barote, Naker Khad and Sooh nallah near Dehra in Kangra District to have a firsthand experience of the impact created by construction of water harvesting dams by the Central Ground Water Board, Ministry of Water Resources, Govt. of India on hydrological improvement of the area, enhancement of crop productivity, conservation of soil & water, biodiversity enhancement and generation of livelihood resources for the rural people of these areas. The visiting team was highly appreciative of the efforts of the HP Forest Department for accomplishment of excellent works though participatory mode/ user groups and imbibed a varied but rich experience on various facets of project activities envisaging toreplicate the same in the state o of J&K as well.
This field tour cum exposure visit became possible only due to initiative and guidance of Mian Altaf, Minister of Forest & Environment, J&K Government and strong administrative support accorded by the Commissioner / Secretary, Forest Department, J&K Government.
