Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, July 3 : The ongoing Amarnath yatra was suspended today from the base camps of Jammu and Srinagar viz a viz Pahalgam and Baltal base camps due to heavy rush and landslides.
An unprecedented rush of vehicles on Pathankot-Jammu-Srinagar National Highway forced the authorities to suspend the pilgrimage today.
"Over 2,000 vehicles of unregistered pilgrims have been stopped at various places enroute Pathankot-Jammu-Srinagar highway as a measure to ease out the rush of the pilgrims, while over 30,000 pilgrims are camping in Jammu base camps," a senior police officer said.
"The yatra was stopped from Jammu for second day today in view of heavy rush of pilgrims at the cave shrine and enroute from Baltal and Pahalgam routes…. No fresh batch of pilgrims was allowed today to move towards Amarnath from Jammu base camp," he added.
Police also stopped pilgrims' vehicles at Lakhanpur Inter-state terminal in Kathua and stopped them there till further orders.
In Jammu base camp, over 30,000 pilgrims have arrived and are housed in various camping locations in Jammu and have been provided with boarding and lodging facilities.
The landslides triggered by heavy rainfall last night also forced the discontinuation of yatra from Baltal and Pahalgam routes today.
"The pilgrims were not allowed from either Pahalgam or Baltal route today due to landslides triggered by rainfall during the night," an official at the yatra control room said.
More than 60,000 pilgrims have stranded at various base camps including Baltal, Sheshnag, Panjtarni and Nunwan (Pahalgam) due to the suspension of the yatra.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer ((CEO) of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB), R K Goyal, has once again appealed to all those who intend to undertake the pilgrimage to the Holy Cave Shrine of Amarnath to complete the necessary registration formalities and obtain a Yatra Permit before embarking on the pilgrimage to avoid facing inconvenience on arrival in the State.
He reiterated that the pilgrims must embark on the Yatra strictly as per the dates and the routes specified in their Yatra Permits, clarifying that instructions had been issued to ensure against any unregistered Yatri being allowed to proceed towards the Holy Cave, under any circumstances.
The CEO said that for the Shrine Board's planning to provide a smooth and a hassle-free Yatra for all pilgrims to be successful it is also the responsibility of every Yatri to display the required discipline and, first of all, obtain a Yatra Permit.
The CEO further disclosed that so far eight Yatris have lost their lives in the Yatra area, due to Cardiac failures. In this context, the CEO reiterated that the Board has, time and again, issued a detailed advisory of Do's and Don'ts for the Yatris visiting the Holy Cave Shrine of Amarnathji, which are also printed on the reverse of the Yatra Permit and, besides, available on the Board's website. He said that the Yatris need to strictly adhere to these Do's and Don'ts, as they have to undertake an arduous trek through high mountains under adverse weather conditions. It has been raining in the Yatra area almost every day since the Yatra began and the Yatris must not take any risk whatsoever.
Later, reviewing the movement plan for the Yatris for tomorrow, the CEO, Goyal, disclosed that as per the latest meteorological reports reaching the Shrine Board this evening, indicate that very heavy rains are expected to lash the entire Yatra area along Baltal and Pahalgam routes and besides, snow fall in the higher mountains along the Yatra routes. In this context, he stated that a decision about further movement of Yatris from Jammu and the Base Camps at Baltal and Pahalgam (Nunwan) will be taken in the early hours of tomorrow after assessing weather conditions along both the routes.
The CEO appealed to the Yatris, who are stranded at various places, not to insist on any forward movement towards the Holy Shrine or the Base Camps, in view of the obtaining adverse weather conditions. He reiterated that the Shrine Board's endeavour at all times is to ensure a smooth, safe and secure movement of the devotees while on pilgrimage to the Holy Cave Shrine of Amarnath.
