Sown area in Jammu Kashmir declining sharply | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu,July 4 : As a result of meagre allocations for development and expansion of areas under various crops the net sown area in Jammu and Kashmir has declined by 11,000 hectares during the last four years, according to a Government report. The report said that there was no doubt that annual allocations in the sector of agriculture had been increasing but after 85 per cent allocations were being spent on the establishment insufficient funds were available for research, extension and other activities related to the development of farming practices. Surprisingly, as per the report, the decline in the sown area in irrigated belts had declined by 2,000 hectares during the last five years. Apart from meagre resources conversion of agricultural lands for non-agricultural practices and purposes too is said to have contributed to the decline in the sown area. In order to check further loss in the sown area in the state the Government plans to take in hand twin measures. First,a law was being enacted under which conversion of agricultural land for non agricultural purposes was being banned except for reasons that warrant use of f arming lands for non-farming practices. \ The Government also plans to assist builders and others to go in for raising multi-storey flats as was being done in rest of the country which would reduce the practices of using agricultural land for raising housing colonies. Secondly, besides emphasizing the need for sowing seeds of high yielding varieties of wheat, paddy, pulses, maize and barley the farmers were being encouraged to adopt double cropping practices. Experts of the Department of agriculture are trying to encourage farmers in irrigated areas to take to multi cropping practices as was being done in selected areas in Punjab and Haryana.
