| Four-year old tsunami victim tortured by adopter | | |

A four-year-old girl who lost her parents in the 2004 tsunami was allegedly tortured with hot iron rods and blades by the woman who adopted her six months ago, officials said today.
The girl is now being treated at the Attur government hospital, 60 km from here, they said.
According to Attur RDO Bhaskara Pandian, 34-year old Bhuwaneswari and her husband had adopted Mona from Ananda Ashram at Hosur in Krishnagiri district, where she was staying since the tsunami.
Bhuwaneswari's neighbours, a few days back, had complained to the State Human Rights Commission that the child was being tortured by the woman.
The Commision directed Pandian to enquire into the matter.
Pandian said when he met the child at the house, she was in a pathetic condition. Her body was full of bruises made by blades and burn injuries caused by hot iron rods and hot water, he said.
The girl was immediately admitted to a Government hospital in Attur and the woman was arrested. A case was filed and police are looking into the matter.
Meanwhile, Ananda Ashram authorities informed the RDO that they would take back the child after she was discharged from hospital. |
