Things may assume alarming proportions | Jammu Central University | | Neha EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 4: Things in the land of the Dogras are heading towards a full-scale confrontation between the authorities and those spearheading the movement for the early establishment of the sanctioned Central University in Jammu. The Jammu Province People's Front (JPPF), the Jammu Central University Morcha (JCUM), The Duggar Pradesh Party (DPP), the Kranti Dal (KD) and several students organizations, including the Jammu University Research Scholars Association (JURSA), the student wing of the Panthers Party (PP), the Jammu Joint Students Front (JJSF) and so on, are holding meetings almost everyday to work out a strategy aimed at forcing the authorities to set up the university in Jammu's Samba district forthwith. The PP has already submitted a detailed memorandum on the issue to the Prime Minister asking him to take concrete steps leading to the establishment of the Central University before it is too late. According to reports, the chairman of the PP has also met the President of India and urged her to constitute a search committee so that she is able to appoint Vice-chancellor. If one goes by the reports emanating from the concerned quarters, then it can be said without any hesitation that those spearheading the movement for the establishment of the Central University could start indefinite hunger strike immediately after the reopening of the educational institutions, including the Jammu University and the Degree colleges. It is the JPPF, a conglomerate of several social and political organizations, which is planning to go in for an indefinite fast to force the authorities to concede their demand. As for the student organizations, they have, according to insiders, made up their mind to disrupt the educational institutions in order to attract the attention of the authorities towards their demand. "We will not allow the educational institutions to function till the time our demand is not conceded," revealed one of the student leaders. What has added more to the anger of those struggling for the establishment of the Central University in Jammu is the rumour that "certain Congress leaders are persuading the Central Government to set up in Jammu the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), instead of Central University." It is this development that has changed the whole scenario with the votaries of the Central University making it loud and clear that "they will not allow anyone to tinker with the original decision come what may." The authorities would do well to concede the demand of the Dogras as early as possible so that the impending confrontation is averted. The state government in particular needs to take cognizance of the situation as developing in the peaceful but rather angry Jammu province. For, it would be the state government that would be confronted with a law and order problem and not the Central Government. Establish the Central University and ensure peace in Jammu province. This is the need of the people and the exigency of the time, which is running out and running out very fast. |
