Slow progress in rural drinking water programme in J&K

Jammu, July 5 : The Union Ministry of Rural Development is said to be unhappy over the tardy progress several schemes, pertaining to augmentation of drinking water supply to rural habitation in Jammu and Kashmir.This unhappiness is stated to have been conveyed to the state Government with reference to the allocation of over Rs.400 crores on schemes aimed at pro-safe drinking water to the rural habitations in Jammu and Kashmir.
Reports said that against the target of covering 962 rural habitations only 90 habitations had been provided with drinking water last year. The Ministry is providing assistance to the state agencies in expediting various schemes for ensuring supply of safe drinking water to the rural habitations.
The report said that as a result of pollution and decline in the water level in village streams and ponds people in the rural areas needed supply of safe drinking water to the people.
As far as Jammu district is concerned the Asian Development Bank has agreed to provide to the st ate Government R s.300 crores for augmenting drinking water supply.
The state Government has been advised to take in hand effective measures for completing all the schemes on supply of drinking water under the National Rural Drinking Water programme.
In addition to this the state Government has taken in hand for improving the functioning of filt ration and treatment plants besides carrying out proper chlorination of water at its sources. In this connection the Government is procuring 1200 metric tonnes of stable bleaching power for chlorination of drinking water before it was supplied to people.(KIP)
