Nothing wrong about BJP's fund raising drive
7/5/2011 11:00:39 PM
Invariably political parties in the opposition have to bank on fund raising exercise by moving from one area to the other, from one district to the other and from one vicinity to the other. This is what is happening in the state unit of the BJP that has launched what its leadership calls fund raising drive. Those who can afford to opt for life-long support they are to deposit Rs.one lakh and others are free to deposit Rs.10,000,Rs.5000 or Rs.1000 per year. This fund collection drive itself reflects the halplessness on the part of the BJP because the big business houses, industrialists and those having earned and are earning tonnes of money have not been liberal in donating money to the saffron brigade. It is so because the BJP is in the opposition and as far as Jammu and Kashmir state is concerned it does not have a chance to form a Government even in the distant future.
No doubt coalition politics has gained firm roots in the troubled state during the last 10 years, the BJP's ideology does not seem to favour it for joining hands with any political parrty, that matters, for forming the Government. There are three major political parties which have their bases in the entire state and these are the National Conference, the PDP and the Congress.Neither the Congress nor the NC nor the PDP are in a position to forge an alliance with the BJP for the purpose of forming the Government on the lines of PDP-Congress combine, that was in power between 2002 and 2008,and the NC-Congress combine that has been in power since 2008.At one stage the National Conference had joined the BJP led NDA Government in the centre when the present Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, had been inducted in the Union Council of Ministers as Minister of state.A number of senior NC leaders are of the view that if the NC failed to win even a simple majority in the Assembly in the 2002 elections it was the result of its temporary alliance with the BJP in the centre.
In fact the rationale behind Farooq Abdullah's yes to joining the BJP led alliance in the centre was his eagerness to be by the right side of the party in power in Delhi.Since the 1984 "coup" against his duly elected Government Farooq Abdullah has pledged against confronting the party in power in the centre. This way big business houses do not donate liber ally to the BJP coffers on the plea that its chances for forming the Government in Jammu and Kashmir were quite bleak.Do the Congress, the NC and the PDP too bank on fund raising drive ?If they do so it is just for public consumption because big business houses, traders and rich orchardists and agriculturists besides contractors registered with the Government willingly fill the coffers of these parties. That the ruling party or the parties receive funds through donations without asking is a national phenomenon and Jammu and Kashmir state cannot be an exception. But there is one difference at the national scene.Rich traders, big business houses, industrialists and those who are in the catalogue of have's donate to all major political parties. They donate major portion of funds earmarked for such activity to the Congress, followed by the BJP,the leftists and the regional parties.A stage has come when no political party can function or carry out its day to day activities for enlarging its areas of influence without money. They cannot fight elections if they do not have funds for woong voters. The fund raising drive and the fund acceptance practices breed corrupt practices. Those big houses that donate tonnes of money to political parties expect favours which are not usually denied.Chalo it is a good thing that the state unit of the BJP has made its fund raising drive public.
