Monkey menace on NH bothering motorists, Wildlife Department
7/5/2011 11:26:54 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, July 5 : With the start of the annual Amarnath pilgrimage to the cave shrine 'monkey menace' has once again started bothering the motorists and the wild life department along the national highway.
In addition to the routine passengers heavy rush of pilgrims have started feeding monkeys along the highway and in return increasing the rate of road side simian deaths.
To experience the monkey menace it is necessary to travel up to Nandini Wild life sanctuary located on the Jammu Srinagar highway to get fair idea how it is impacting the flow of normal traffic on the highway at crucial locations.
According to official sources each day three- four monkey deaths are being reported between Nandini and Nagrota leg of the national highway. The rising number of monkey deaths are being reported as monkeys rush after the vehicles from where passengers start throwing eatables towards them.Soon after one of the food packet is dropped by a pilgrim or a routine passenger a flock of monkeys gather at the same point and fight over the food packets to satiate their hunger pangs.
To spread awareness among the passengers the wild life department has launched a massive campaign but it seems it is difficult to overpower the faith and bring reform and change in the thinking pattern of the pilgrims that by offering food item to a monkey they are inviting more trouble for the simian population than anyone else. In some cases drivers of light motor vehicles have avoided road accidents in a bid to save the monkey running in the middle of the highway to pick the food item thrown from the running bus,or other types of motor vehicles.
