Oh, they did it for Telangana & showed Delhi its place | Replicating Telangana In Jammu | | Neha EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 5: The people's representatives in the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh (AP) have done it. It was only two days ago that the Congress and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leadership belonging to the region declared that their ministers, MPs and MLAs would resign from the positions they hold in the parliament, the AP Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council and in the AP Council of Ministers in case their demand for the creation of Telangana State was not conceded by July 4 and a vast majority of tendered resignation on the D-day, when the central leadership and the UPA Government failed to concede their demand. They rejected outright the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram's and the Union Health Minister and in-charge AP Congress Ghulam Nabi Azad's counsel that those demanding Telangana State should maintain patience as the "consultation process is on." How many MPs, ministers and MLAs belonging to the Congress party resigned and to whom they handed over their resignation letters? 10 Congress MPs and 39 out of 55 MLAs, including 11 ministers hailing from the Telangana region resigned. The MPs submitted their resignation letters to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and not the party president. Similarly, the Congress MLAs and ministers submitted their resignation letters to the Speaker of the AP Assembly. Rajya Sabha member belonging to the Congress party K Keshave Rao met the Officer on Special Duty to the Vice-president of India and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Hamid Ansari, and submitted his resignation letter to him. This shows they were really committed to what they had said two days ago. They did not play a political drama by submitting their resignation letters to the party leadership. They submitted resignation letters to the concerned constitutional authorities. How many MLAs belonging to the TDP resigned? 34 out of 36 TDP MLAs hailing from the Telangana region belonging resigned from their coveted constitutional positions, thus setting a glorious example of the leadership's commitment to the people they represent. 13 MLCs belonging to the Congress and the TDP also resigned. In other words, the total number of those who resigned for Telangana is 96 - 10 MPs, 73 MLAs and 13 MLCs. Two days ago, the Telangana leadership had said: "They are for the people and not for position" and they proved that. It would not be out of place to mention here that the Telangana region is not under-developed as compared to the Jammu province. In fact, Telangana region just cannot be compared with the Jammu province in any respect. While Jammu province stands totally ignored and marginalized, Telangana region is developed to a considerable extent. The Chief Minister of AP also belongs to Telangna. Besides, Telangana, unlike Jammu province, also controls portfolios with considerable political weight and funds. The fact of the matter is that Telangana region can be compared with any of the developed region of the country, barring Kashmir that is the most prosperous region in the whole of the country. And, yet, the leadership of Telangana wants separate state. As for the representatives of the people of Jammu province belonging to the Congress, the BJP, the NC and the PDP, they have, it seems, completely forgotten their own people. They do not speak for Jammu. Nor do they work for the fulfillment of the promises that they made from time to time. Take, for example, the failure of the Congress to respect its solemn commitment to amend the State Constitution and set up regional council for Jammu province. Take, for example, the failure of the Congress to honour its commitment that it would set up delimitation commission and end discrimination with the people of Jammu province. Take, for example, the failure of the Congress, the BJP, the NC and the PDP legislators to force the authorities to establish in Jammu province the sanctioned Central University. Take, for instance, the failure of the Congress ministers and legislators to come up to the expectations of the people of Jammu province by defeating those who wanted to withdraw that order under which the Dogras had been entitled to obtain Dogra certificates from the revenue authorities. The anti-Dogra elements won and the Jammu-based Congress ministers and legislators miserably failed. Rather, they became a party to the anti-Dogra move. One can site here several other similar instances to prove that all the Jammu-based legislators have miserably failed to discharge their obligations. What, then, is the way out? The only way out is replication of Telangana in Jammu province. What the question is will the so-called representatives of the people of Jammu province do what the ministers, MPs, MLAs and MLCs did in Telangana for Telangana and its people? No one can answer this question considering the kind of representatives the people of Jammu province have sent to the Lok Sabha, the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council. When will the people of Jammu produce the Telangana-type leadership and enjoy equal powers with the people of Kashmir as part and parcel of the Indian society? |
