Jammu leadership defeating Jammu, say people | Jammu Issue | | Rustam EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 5: Who is defeating the people of Jammu province? Who is jeopardizing the legitimate rights and interests of the people of Jammu province? Who has left the people of Jammu province in the lurch? What has led to the Jammu's all-round degeneration and its politico-economic and social neglect? Has the Jammu leadership ever tried to take up the cause of the people of Jammu province on the floor of the Assembly and Legislative Council or has the Jammu leadership taken cudgels with the Kashmiri rulers who have always been guided more by the Kashmiri interests and have evolved and implemented policies basically designed to benefit Kashmir and its people, even at the cost of the people of Jammu province and Ladakh? What is the nature of relationship between the national-level parties like the Congress and the BJP and the Kashmiri leadership? These are some of the questions which need answers. And, who would be the appropriate persons to answer these simple and straight questions? Obviously, the people of Jammu province alone could answer these pertinent questions. For, they know where the shoe is pinching. For, they know who has damaged them. For, they know who are responsible for their miserable plight and socio-economic and political degeneration. For, they know who have bartered away their legitimate rights and interests for the sake of their personal profit and personal power. Ask these questions to anyone in Jammu province and his/her answer would be? Jammu leadership. His/her answer would be "it is the Jammu leadership that has destroyed them socially, culturally, economically and politically by hobnobbing with or by befriending the Kashmiri ruling elite." His/her answer would be "it is the conspiracy hatched by the Jammu leadership, Kashmiri leadership and the central leadership that has rendered Jammu weak and unreal for all practical purposes and empowered Kashmir and its people to the extent that they consider Jammu as their colony and its people as their slaves whose life is not one of socio-economic and political aspirations." He/she would at once say that "it is basically the Jammu leadership that has hit the people of Jammu province below the belt and created a situation that has emboldened the anti-Jammu elements to the extent that they contemptuously dismiss them as chauvinist, regionalist, communal, reactionary, and even anti-Kashmir when they demand empowerment or a dispensation that treats all the three regions and the people these regions house equally at all levels and in all spheres." He/she would at once say that the "national-level parties like the Congress and the BJP have abandoned the people of Jammu province to prove their so-called secular credentials" and that the "Congress and the BJP believe that taking up the cause of the people of Jammu province would mean more alienation in Kashmir." In other words, he/she would say that the "Congress and the BJP would never identify themselves with Jammu and its neglected population because they feel their identification with Jammu would erode its support-base among the minorities in the country, especially among the Muslims." After all, Jammu returns only two members to the Lok Sabha. In fact, these were some of the answers some of the grievously hurt people belonging to Jammu gave when confronted with such questions. The situation is horrible. There is total disconnect and mistrust between the people and the major political parties. They are more critical of the Congress and the BJP than the NC and the PDP. They say "they do not expect any fair play from the Kashmiri leadership." This is not good for the Jammu's political class. The Jammu leadership needs to take cognizance of what the people have started thinking about it and refashion its whole approach towards those whom, it says, it represents. And, the sooner the parties like the Congress and the BJP do so the better for them, better for the people of Jammu, and even better for the country. The Jammu leadership must remember that it just cannot brush aside the Jammu issue any longer. It has to deal with the people of Jammu and befriend them whatever they may think of them. The situation has changed and the people are very angry with their own leadership. |
