Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 5: The Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah's decision to abstain from the one day convention of Youth All India Kashmiri Samaj (YAIKS)on July 1 at K K resorts has drawn a flak from organizers and the cross section of society.
Abdullah and his three ministers who were scheduled to grace the occasion as chief and special guests respectively have left the gathering high and dry after not attending the convention. This way Abdullah did not only add to the woes of the organizers who were just few hours before assured by him that he will turn up at the function as per the scheduled programme but has also generated a lot of criticism from the masses as a whole.
As a Chief Minister of the state Abdullah belongs to every section of society and not to a particular class of people. He is duty bound to look into the problems confronting all sections of society whether they vote for his National Conference or not. Moreover there should be no consideration for a Chief Minister whether a particular section is vote bank for his party or not. And being above all these considerations he has to look into the problems of every section of the society whether belonging to majority or minority community.
So far as the issue of displaced Kashmiri Pandits is concerned Abdullah right from beginning adopted a rigid stand towards them. Ignoring all the facts and reasons that led to the mass exodus of the community from Kashmir Valley in 1989-90, the Chief Minister joined the bandwagon of the KPs detractors saying that they either left on their own or at the behest of former Governor of the state Jagmohan. Though this very statement was contradicted by none else than his father and patriarch of National Conference, Dr Farooq Abdullah who is on record to say that the Pandits were forced to flee from the Valley by terrorists.
Even his Cabinet colleague and former PCC chief Peerzada Mohammed Syed is on record to say that the conditions for Pandits return were not conducive in Kashmir and the community will only return to their homes and hearths when Peerzada and his other ministerial colleagues are in a position to move freely in Valley without the security guards.
This was not the only irresponsible statement of the Chief Minister about this hapless community who has a tremendous contribution in the development of state as well a s country. The young Chief Minister earlier a t a number of occasions was on record to say that the Government could have mitigated the sufferings of the community but it has a divided leadership. Even on the Passage of Kashmiri Hindu Shrines and Religious Places bill the CM has hinted about the divided leadership of the community forgetting that the majority community in Kashmir too has a divided leadership and separatist Hurriyat has scores of leaders fighting among each other for one upmanship for years together.
If this is a common phenomena in the state then there is no exception of Pandts having mushroom of organizations and CM should not make it an issue while addressing the problems of the community. The recent decision of Abdullah to abstain from the youth convention has been viewed seriously by the organizers and others who were present in the function saying that this way CM has shown that he was not keen in redressing the problems of the hapless Pandits leading an exiled life for last 22 years.
The CM has shown that Pandits are not a vote bank and hence his Party has no advantage in attending their function, said Ramesh Kumar a KP youth who was also present in the convention to hear an announcement by Abdullah about the overaged youth of the community.
Besides Kumar other members of the community who were present in the meeting had the similar views. Rakesh bhat another youth said that the community will have also its way if the NC has such an anti feeling about the hapless community. ``In last elections we voted enmass for the party and in future we will change our strategy if the party has such a discriminatory approach about us''.
