Jammu, July 5: The Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah while felicitating the people on the birthday of Guru Hargobind Singhji said Sikhs were an integral part of Kashmiriyat.
Omar said Sikhs had shared moments of joy and grief with their Muslim brethern in the Valley for enturies.
“The 20 years of disturbance and uncertainty in the Valley didn’t shake the bonds of love and brotherhood between Sikhs and majority community but these got further cemented”, he said while addressing a congregation at Gurdawara Chatti Padshahi in the Summer capital today.
The Chief Minister said that the pluralistic ethos, cultural diversity, secular amity and brotherhood are the specialty of the State. “Kashmiriyat denotes tolerance, mutual amity, respect to each other’s faiths and equal opportunity to grow. It represents love, brotherhood and trust”, he said adding that Hindu, Muslim and Sikhs have equally contributed to safeguards the high principles of Kashmiriyat.
The Chief Minister said that the slogan of ‘Hindu, Muslim and Sikh Itihad’ raised and propagated by the Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah has always loomed large on the State’s secular democratic spectrum and will continue to strengthen the secular characteristic of the State.
Omar also said that his government was committed to solving problems of all the people irrespective of the faith they professed. The people especially the Sikh community find it difficult to digest. A devotee in the Gurdawara after hearing Omar's speech said: "The Sikh community has been begging for a berth in the state cabinet for the past three years. Nobody seems interested in taking note."
He, however, praised Sher-e-Kashmir for giving the Sikh community the honour it deserved. Sardar Budh Singh was an important member of National Conferene. He was Sher-e-Kashmiris close associate who held him in high esteem", he said
