‘Tree talk’ held in KU

Srinagar, July 6 (KNS): 38th series of popular environment programme ‘Tree Talk’ was today organized in the Botanical Garden Kashmir University. The event was organized to pay tribute to former HoD Botany Department and renowned Botanist Prof P N Kachroo.
Recalling the contributions of Prof Kachroo who laid the foundations of Ecological and Taxonomical studies in the University of Kashmir, the participants hailed his contributions.
Prof Z A Reshi HoD Botany while welcoming the ‘tree talk’ participants emphasized the need of horizontal and vertical collaboration at all levels so that whatever is discussed is translated into fruitful action in the field. He said that all species have indispensable role to play in the intricate web of life and need to be conserved in their native habitats. He emphasized that cultural diversity is interlinked with conservation of bio-resources.
Former PCCF J&K, A R Wani while appreciating ‘tree talk’ initiative said that this area is known for mighty Chinars planted in Naseem Bagh during the times of Mughal Emperor. He advocated for establishment of Biodiversity Board in the state at the earliest alongwith establishment of the Nature Centre in the Kashmir University to act as a platform for holding brain storming sessions regarding conservation of culture and biodiversity.
O P Sharma senior Forest Officer shared that Viburnum grandiflorum is familiar Sheep berry, its blooms pink red and fragrant, floral cluster a mini wazbaan for the bees, feast of joy in the wilderness.
Over 60 participants comprising of Botanists, Zoologists, Forest Officers, Horticulturists, Environmentalists, students, scholars, poets and others took keen interest in 2 hour long deliberations which centred on folk taxonomy, tree history, medicinal plants, ecology, wildlife, conservation strategies and mitigation of pollution in the water-bodies.
