Jammu & Kashmir ultras’ strength declining: Army | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 6: The Indian army has claimed that counter-infiltration and counter-terrorist operations has brought down the militant strength to a subcritical level in the valley. “Army’s Chinar Corps (based in Srinagar), a formation most active in counter-infiltration and counter-terrorist operations, over the years has brought down the militant strength in the Valley to a subcritical level,” a defence spokesman at Srinagar said. The fresh claim comes just months after security forces’ assessment that 42 training camps are operational on the other side of line of control (LoC) in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir and around 700 militants are waiting to cross over into this side for subversion. However the army’s signal has given the Jammu and Kashmir government a fresh hope that the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) may be withdrawn from relatively peaceful areas of the Valley by the year end. “I have not seen the statement. But if the army has issued a statement it has opened a window for us about our winter proposal (withdrawal of AFSPA from relatively peaceful areas),” Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah told agencies.(Agencies)
