J&K as tourist state earning bad name
Few helping stranded pilgrims, others making easy money
7/6/2011 11:35:22 PM
Jammu, July 6, In the last couple of days the image of the tourist state has been hit hard due to greedy behavior of very few businessmen who are leaving no stone unturned to extract maximum profit from the stranded pilgrims enroot Amarnath cave shrine.
Due to suspension of yatra from the Jammu base camp several hundred pilgrims have been left stranded in Jammu and at various locations along the National highway due to bad weather conditions.
In the absence of any other alternate solution the pilgrims are left with very little option but to stay put till they get green signal to proceed to the cave shrine.
Besides facing numerous hardships on account of arranging logistics for their family members and members of the tour party the pilgrims have realized that at various places the local businessmen, hoteliers, owners of food malls have been taken them for a ride and are selling goods such as food items, snacks, hotel rooms and other items of their use on higher rates.
The area near Bhagwati Nagar base camp is notorious for charging hefty rates from pilgrims who take shelter in the night in rented accommodation. A plat eof Dal Rice is costing pilgrims Rs 30-35, tea-coffee Rs 10-12, snacks 20-30 per piece, butter toast @ rs 20. Then there are road side businessmen who sell items of daily use for the pilgrims and are making merry for charging premium rates due to higher demand.
The situation is even worse along the national highway. The pilgrims stranded on the highway are becoming easy prey and paying hefty food bills.
The state government agencies, entrusted with the task of ensuring smooth conduct of the yatra are finding it difficult to rein in the corrupt and the greedy businessmen as no pilgrim has bothered to lodge a formal complaint. A senior officer of the state government camping in the Bhagwati Nagar yatri niwas said we have kept complaint boxes for pilgrims to register their complaint and give us the feedback but very few people bother to write a complaint and due to their own ignorance suffer. When team of the KIP reporters interacted with pilgrims stranded at the national highway near Nagrotra they complained that various food stalls are selling snacks at premium and exploiting them instead of extending them a helping hand.
