Landslides result in the death of 2 teachers
38 cross Zojila safely

Srinagar, Nov 26
Of the 40 people who were caught up in snow bound Zojila area on Srinagar-Leh National high way, heavy landslides resulted in the death of two civilians, while 38 others had a miraculous escape.
Divulging details, SDPO Kangan, Mohd Ayub said a group of forty persons including Government employees and labourers proceeded to Srinagar in a passenger bus, but heavy snowfall forced them to get down from the bus near Gumri and they decided to travel on foot upto Sonamarg. However they caught up in snow near Zero point in Zojila area and intensity of snow storm was so high that journey to Sonmarg looked very difficult to these 40 odd people. However they continued efforts to cross Zojila area. Ayub said that heavy landslides, resulted in the death of two civilians identified as Syed Shabi Ahmed Andrabi S/O Syed Sharief-ud-Din R/O Poochul Pulwama and Bashir Ahmed Mir S/O Gh Rasool R/O Akingam Anantnag, both teachers by profession following which panic griped the whole group and they got separated from each other within no time. The remaining 38 passengers tried to rescue the bodies of deceased but failed and heavy landslides force they to continue their journey for the whole nigh and they crossed Zojila on Sunday morning.
They took shelter in a nearby army camp from where they informed police as a result of which police authorities based in Kangan established contact with Police Control Room (PCR) Srinagar following which a team was rushed to the area on the instructions of Inspector General of Police (Kashmir) S.M.Sahay.
However Drass police when contacted said that they have no knowledge about the crossing of Zojila by a group of 40 people including Government employees and labourers. However authorities claimed that on receiving information from PCR Srinagar, a team of police officials was rushed to the area for conducting rescue operations.Eye witness informed that body of Shabir Ahmed Andrabi is lying under a heavy blanket of snow, while one hand of Bashir Ahmed Mir is lying outside the landslide. It has been learnt that 3 feet snow has been recorded on Zojila and movement of vehicular traffic to Kargil is banned.
