Omar reviews 4-lane National Highway project
Stresses on fast tracking of land acquisition

SRINAGAR, July 6:
Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today asked the State Revenue Department to fast track the disbursement of compensation to the people whose land is being acquired for the construction of 4-lane National Highway project from Lakhanpur to Srinagar. The Chief Minister directed the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir to monitor the clearance of payment to the concerned wherever it is yet to be made so that the land is handed over to the National Highway Authority for construction work.
Omar Abdullah highlighted the importance of this project for the overall socio-economic development and progress of the State and emphasized the need for joint efforts for its timely completion. “Keeping its significance in mind the officers concerned at all levels should devote fullest attention to remove all bottlenecks on fast track to help completion of the project well in time”, he added.
The Chief Minister was taking stock of the progress of works at various places on the construction of 400 kilometer National Highway from Lakhanpur to Srinagar as part of North-South corridor.
In a PowerPoint presentation the Member NHAI explained the status of the road and said that two tunnels of 8.5 kilometers and 9.2 kilometers length in Qazigund-Ramban sector are ready to be constructed this month.
He said 114 kilometers of the road project from Lakhanpur to Jammu including 15 kilometers Jammu Bye-pass and 17.80 kilometers Srinagar Bye-pass have been completed.
The 68 minor bridges, 254 box culverts and 8 major bridges have been completed so far on this project. He said two bridges at Ujj and Basanter are ready to be executed by July 2011 end.
It was stated in the meeting that the work on 67.76 kilometers Srinagar-Banihal stretch has been awarded while the work for 15.25 kilometers Qazigund-Banihal tunnels has also been awarded and their financial closure is under process.
Similarly, work on 65 kilometer Uhampur-Jammu stretch has also been awarded. The meeting discussed various issues relating to the construction of tunnels, land compensation, status of amounts deposited with Revenue, Forest and Power Departments, and the status of utility shifting.
