| Significance of Giving Heartfelt Thanks | | | The act of expressing thanks to the Supreme Creator through prayers, charity and good acts is ordained for bringing an individual closer to an understanding of the purpose of Creation.
Thanksgiving has been highly valued in the Qur'an. "What concern hath Allah for your punishment if ye are thankful for his mercies and believe in Him? Allah is ever responsive, aware".
The more a believer reflects on this Qur'anic verse, the more he is able to realise the depths of his growing spiritual consciousness that he is an inseparable part of universal cons-ciousness.
The primary objective behind the constant expression of thanks is in acknow-ledgement of the gifts that Allah has bestowed on all human beings.
An expression of gratitude - also an act of thanksgiving - for small courtesies is part of our normal behaviour.
Normally, most people thank each other in their daily conversation, correspondence and other forms of social behaviour.
Life would be dull and dreary if we stop making friendly gestures in our human relationships. As a matter of fact, the development of both personalities and societies is in no small measure affected by our individual friendly actions and responses.
It is not therefore difficult to understand why Allah wants our thoughts and actions to be in harmony with the ethical principles of spiritual practice.
Any deviation from the universal ethics recommended by scriptures and sages is bound to create disharmony in human relations; and this is why the Qur'an repeatedly brings home to us the significance of being conscious of our duty to Him and His creatures.
"Seest thou one who denies the Judgment to come? Then such is the one who repulses the orphan, and encourages not the feeding of the indigent. So woe the worshippers who are neglectful of their prayers, those who want but to be seen, but refuse to supply even neighbourly needs".
Being poor or destitute is not a disqualification in spiritual terms. Likewise, any physical challenge does not disqualify an individual from remembering His Creator so long as he has cons-ciousness. |
