Is Omar's meetings with Congress workers a double-edged weapon?
7/7/2011 1:29:25 AM
Early Times Report
Jammu, July 6 : Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, has started interacting with congress workers and to begin with he had a meeting with Congress activists from Kupwara and Baramullah the other day in a bid to seek their views on governance so that the Government could not only strengthen coalition dharma but also lead to the mitigation of peoples' problems.
Though one need not suspect the motives behind Omar 's exercise, several questions come up which deserve elucidation and explanation.First question. Will Omar Abdullah be able to know peoples'views on governance only through his interaction with the Congress activists and workers? Reports said that Omar has decided to hold regular interaction with the workers and activists of the Congress and the National Con-ference.Does it mean that only the congress and the National Conference represent people and their aspirations? Do the Congress and the National Conference workers and activists represent wishes and frustrations of people of the state?Or does Omar wants to convey to Delhi that it is smooth between the National Conference and the Congress ?
Had it been the case the Congress and the National Conference parties would have, together or individually, won absolute majority in the Assembly elections in 2002 and 2008.It was not the case.Hence if Omar or anybody else claim that the Congress and the National Conference alone represent peoples'aspirations, urges, desires, frustrations and hopes they may be wrong.
Another major questions are.By meeting congress workers does Omar intend to weaken the hold of Saif-ud-Din Soz or Ghulam Nabi Azad on the Congress ?Is Omar Abdullah aiming at making Soz and Azad redundant ?Does Omar harbour fears about the Congress machinations as far as the issue of rotational Chief Ministersip is concerned ? And hence he wishes to cultivate the Congress workers at the grassoot level in a bid to impr ess the Congress high command about his being indispensable. No doubt Omar has been assured by Prime Minister,Manmohan Singh, that the unwritten agreement on allowing NC man to run the Government for six years will not be altered, the Chief Minister is not sure of the future moves of the Congress.
As such Omar wishes to assume a bigger role than being a Chief Minister with the support of the Congress. He does not want to show himself as a Chief Minister depending on the support of the Congress.By interacting with the Congress workers Omar wishs to convey to New Delhi that as Chief Minister he does not take the Congress for granted,a charge that is doing the round in the top circles in the Congress high command.
There are some congress leaders in the state who describe Omar's exercise as part of his plan to woo cong ress workers to the National Conference which could be possible if the Chief Minister, during his meetings with the Congress activists, concedes some of their demands or resolves some of their problems and difficulties.
Whatever impression sceptics have about Omar's programme of interacting with the Congress workers and those belonging to National Conference the exercise needs to be appreciated as it may serve the interests of people, even if the number be small. It would be still better if Omar keeps his doors open for people having different political ideas and ideologies.
