Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Jul 6: After weeks of calm and tranquility in Baramulla district, militants today struck with a rifle grenade and a scooter bomb in apple town of Sopore, causing injuries to nine Police personnel. Meanwhile, an Inspector of J&K Police Telecommunication wing, who was known as right hand man of former IGP of Kashmir and today’s DGP of Punjab Mr P S Gill, today succumbed to injuries at SMHS Hospital. Suspected militants had pumped five rounds into Inspector Shabi’s body in Batmaloo area on June 29th.

Inspector Shabir Ahmed, currently posted in office of SSP Police Telecommunications, Naseer Ahmed, breathed his last at SMHS Hospital in the wee hours today. He battled for life for seven days after he was attacked by suspected militants at his home at Iqbal Colony (Bakhshipora) Batmaloo on June 29th. Doctors who treated him at SMHS Hospital said that five pistol shots had been pumped into Inspector Shabir’s body.

Even after attaining a high profile in counter-insurgency and becoming famous as then IGP Kashmir P S Gill’s confidante, Shabir had been living at his house in once militant-infested Batmaloo-Bemina locality. According to well placed authoritative sources, he came to be known as ‘Shabir Gill’ on account of his intimate association with Mr Gill, who, for years, remained unbeaten in his counter-insurgency profile in Kashmir. For several years, Gill planned and executed hundreds of counter-insurgency operations when he served as DIG of Central Kashmir followed by IGP Kashmir for four years.

In recent times, Inspector Shabir’s killing is the most important achievement for militants in central Kashmir as they have failed to strike on a significant target, hard or soft, in the last over three years.

Within minutes, an IED, planted in a parked scooter around the same spot, went off with a deafening explosion. It left as many as nine Police personnel wounded.
