Fresh batch of 3,186 yatris leave for Amarnath from Jammu | Despite threat of rains, pilgrimage going on, 2 more yatris die | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU/SRINAGAR, July 7: A fresh batch of 3,186 pilgrims today left for the holy cave shrine of Shri Amarnath from the Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas Base Camp here amid tight security arrangements. Despite threat of rains in the afternoon on both traditional Pahalgam and shortest Baltal track, more than 15000 pilgrims today left base camps for holy Amarnath cave shrine, situated at 13500 feet above sea level in south Kashmir Himalayas. “Another batch of total 3,186 pilgrims comprising 2028 males, 886 females, 66 children and 206 sadhu left for the Amarnath cave shrine in a convoy of 101 vehicles this morning at around 0515 hrs,” a police spokesman here said. They said 26 state road buses, 41 private and 34 light motor vehicles left for the cave shrine from the base camp. Meanwhile, two more pilgrims died, raising the number of yatris who died to 28 since the commencement of the 46-day-long pilgrimage on June 29. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) R K Goyal said according to the forecast provided by the Met department, the sky will remain partly cloudy today while it will remain generally cloudy on July 8 and 9. There could be rain on both the tracks in the afternoon. However, on July 10 and 11, light rain and thundershowers, are expected in Kashmir division. The details of weather forecast are available on the Met Dept’s website (www.Amssdelhi.Gov.In). A yatra official said over phone from Nunwan Pahalgam base camp, 7432 piligrims left for Chandanwari, the last motorable halting station on the traditional track this morning. He said those who had night halt at different stations also started their onward journey this morning towards the shrine. Those who had completed their darshan also started their return journey, he said. Similarly, despite rain threat, 7955 pilgrims left Baltal base camp this morning to have darshan of the self made Ice-Shivlingam in the cave shrine this afternoon. However, majority of them will stay near the shrine in the camps while others will start return journey after darshan today. Official sources said about 1.6 lakh pilgrims have darshan of the Shivlingam since June 29 against 2.52 lakh yatris who have registered themselves for this year pilgrimage. The yatra will conclude on August 13, the Raksha bandhan day. Mr Goyal said as the yatra traverses through high mountains, facing strong winds, the yatris need to carry adequate woollen clothing, a small umbrella (which covers the head with an elastic band around the forehead and supported by a strap around the chin), wind-cheater, raincoat, sleeping bag, waterproof shoes, torch, walking stick with a proper hand grip, cap (preferably a monkey cap), gloves, jacket, woolen socks and trousers. He added that these are essential as the climate is unpredictable and changes abruptly from sunny weather to rain or snow and the temperature may sometimes abruptly fall to 5 degree celsius or lower. For women pilgrims saree is not a suitable dress for the yatra. Salwar kameez, pant-shirt or a track-suit will be more comfortable. Keeping in view the tough nature of the trek, small children shall not be allowed to undertake the yatra. Before hiring a pony, dandi or a labourer the yatri must satisfy himself that the ponywalla, the labourer or the dandiwalla is duly registered and carries an identity card. The yatris can do the hiring at rates fixed by the local administration, at the camps at Baltal, Nunwan (Pahalgam)and Panjtarni. The pilgrims must take care to see that the porters and horses or ponies with their luggage move close to them as it may be difficult to trace them in case they get separated from each other. This is necessary as the yatris may suddenly need something from their luggage. During the yatra from Pahalgam and Baltal onwards the yatris must keep their clothes and eatables in a suitable waterproof bag to avoid these getting wet. The yatris have been further advised to carry sufficient money to pay for their accommodation at base camps and at other halting stations enroute the Holy Cave and for meeting other personal requirements. To enable the yatra authorities to take urgent necessary action in case a yatri is involved in any emergency, the yatris are advised to keep in their pockets a note containing the name, address, mobile telephone number of any other yatri proceeding for darshan on the same date and route as they are following. They must also carry their identity card/driving license and the yatra permit issued by the Shrine Board. Every yatri is advised to carry all the medicines which he takes daily and, besides, some general medicines such as glucose, disprin, combiflam Move or iodex. They should also carry a water bottle, dry fruits, roasted baked grams or channa, toffees and sufficient chocolates, for use during the journey. Further, the yatris should keep some cold cream, vaseline and sun Screen with them to protect the skin from the cold winds and sun. They have also been advised to keep dark glasses or goggles handy. While trekking, they need to relax for a short while on steep inclines and not exert beyond their normal capacity. The best way to complete the yatra trek is to maintain a slow and steady pace and not unnecessarily exhaust or tire themselves by walking fast. The yatris must also follow the instructions issued by the yatra administration from time to time. Mr Goyal also informed that all relevant information regarding the Amarnath yatra is available on the Board’s website “www.Shriamarnathjishrine.Com”. The yatris can also seek information from the Shrine Board control room at 0194-2501679.
