India too is caught in this vicious circle of drug abuse and the numbers of drug addicts are increasing day by day. Saying that it is very important for the Departments like DLL to organize such sensitization and awareness workshop amongst youth to create and spread awareness about drug abuse which causes immense human distress, he added that as India has the largest population of the youth in the world, it is also very important for all of us to save them from such abuse. “With most drug users being in the productive age group of 18-35 years, the loss in terms of human potential is incalculable. The damage to the physical, psychological, moral and intellectual growth of the youth is very high. Adolescent drug abuse is one of the major areas of concern in adolescent and young people's behavior, he said adding that more such workshops should be organized for the youth on the theme. In his key note address, Farooq Khan, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Jammu, who also has a significant experience in dealing with the crimes related to drugs and narcotics trade in his career, said that like other parts of India, drug users are increasing in Jammu and Kashmir also but Jammu, as such, is free from hard drug abuse but at the same time it does not mean that it is going to remain forever. He felt that the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking has to be joint one in which all the stakeholders have to work together. Drug abuse, said the senior police officer, has led to a detrimental impact on the society and an increase in the crime rate.
