SSP orders inquiry into incident | Amarnath Yatris' cane charging episode Dy SP's brother booked for obstructing police to perform duty | | Sumit Sharma EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 7: Even as the annual Amarnath Yatra is going on smoothly, except for minor hiccups due to inclement weather and huge rush of pilgrims, the cane charging on Amarnath Yatris on the intervening night of July 2 and 3 at Nagrota has snowballed into a major controversy. Various political parties, Hotel & Restaurant Association, Katra as well as Travel Agents Association, Jammu today called on senior police officers of Jammu district and vociferously demanded action against the 'erring' cops. A joint delegation of members of various organizations met with Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu zone, Dilbagh Singh, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Jammu-Kathua range Farooq Khan and SSP Jammu Anand Jain. The deputation apprised the officers of the 'barbaric act' of police on Amarnath pilgrims as they were cane charged without any valid reason. Meanwhile, when contacted SSP Jammu Anand Jain informed that an inquiry into the matter has been ordered. However, sources said that a case under section 186 RPC has been registered against Rakesh Wazir, senior vice president of Hotel & Restaurant Association Katra, for creating obstacles for police officers in performing their duty on the day when police resorted to lathicharge. Rakesh Wazir, who happens to be the brother of Dy SP Shashi Thakur, allegedly, abetted yatris to hold protest and raised slogans against police and administration for not allowing them to proceed further. The case was registered on the instruction of Tehsildar Jammu, sources added. It is worthwhile to mention here that on July 2, a chaotic situation prevailed on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway as well as base camps of Pahalgam and Baltal viz a viz enroute cave shrine of Amarnath due to harsh weather conditions, unprecedented rush of Yatris and alleged inadequate arrangements made by the authorities concerned including Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, civil and police administration. From the early morning of Saturday last, hundreds of vehicles carrying Amarnath Yatris remained stranded at various places enroute Highway. Many pilgrims were stopped at Nagrota Naka by the police; later police set up nakas at various places including Manda, Panjtirthi, Bus Stand to stop them from proceeding forward. As a result, a long queue of vehicles formed within few hours along National Highway. Despite, the announcement by local administration during late hours on Friday night vis-à-vis suspension of yatra from Bhagwati Yatri Niwas base camp in Jammu a large number of pilgrims made efforts to move forward and refused to go back at Bhagwati Nagar base camp resulting into a heavy traffic jam on National Highway. To clear the choked highway and to restore vehicular traffic, police resorted to lathi charge on Amarnath Yatris at Nagrota.
