Social activists demand judicial probe in land grabbing in J&K | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 8: Under the cover of the RTI numbers of social activists have applied for information regarding the extent of land grabbing in Jammu and Kashmir during the last several years. One RTI activist has sent an application to the Director Generl police, Kuldeep Khoda, seeking information about the number of senior police officers involved in land grabbing. The RTI activist, who is also a lawyer, is of the opinion that senior police officers have been in the forefront of those who have and are grabbing land through illegal practices. As a result of alleged nexus between junior Revenue officials, police, politicians and bureaucrats land belonging to Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council, A S Mickey, had been grabbed. Another RTI activist wanted to know from the Government the number of police officers, senior bureaucrats, politicians who after grabbing land illegally, have set up farm houses in Jammu and its adjoining areas. They said that land grabbing has not remained confined to only in and around the twin capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu but to other towns also. Official sources said that even the forest land too has been grabbed in various areas. The successive state Governments have been watching it helplessly because places like Bhatindi and adjoining areas, which used to be forest area, had been grabbed by influential politicians and bureaucrats. They said that at times the Government is helpless because those who have grabbed land produce relevant documents which confirm their ownership. The sources said that these documents have been prepared with the help of some junior officers of the Revenue Department. Social activists demand a judicial probe into all cases of land grabbing in Jammu and Kashmir.
