| Vegetable production in JK registers marginal decrease | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu,July 9 : Despite the fact that over 13.5 lakh tonnes of vegetables are being produced annually in Jammu and Kashmir people in the state continue to bank on heavy imports of various types of vegetables from Punjab and Haryana besides Himachal Pradesh. Official sources said that during the last 10 years the annual production of vegetables has declined because of rapid conversion of vegetable producing fields into housing colonies. In certain areas on the periphery of Jammu and Srinagar cities small industrial sheds and shopping centres have come up on fields where vegetables used to be grown. Sources said that as compared to the Kashmir valley the region of Jammu has shown marginal rise in vegetable production. They said besides increase in production the Jammu region has started producing those varieties of vegetables which were unknown to the region. In support of their contention they cited the cultivation of pumpkins,brinjals,knol-khol,Haak Saag etc. They said that scientists of the two Agricultural universities have been told to evolve seeds of new varieties of vegetables so that Jammu and Kashmir could have the potential of achieving self-sufficiency and be in a position to export vegetables to the neighboring states. As far as potato cultivation is concerned Departmental officials have been asked to encourage farmers in growing vegetables on higher reaches where the climate and soil were conducive for potato production. In addition to this the Government is helping farmers in creating potato seed villages so that growers were able to get high yielding seeds on time which co-boost potato cultivation in Jammu and Kashmir. Experts have suggested to the Government to enact a piece of legislation which could prevent conversion of vegetables fields into housing colonies.(KIP)
