NAAC team July 17-22 visit: KU ‘paints’ its failures | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, July 9 (KNS): At a time when National Assessment and Accreditation Council team is visiting to survey University of Kashmir, various departmental buildings are being painted “at the cost of class work.” Students of various departments alleged that class work was badly affected due to the painting work going on from last month or so. “This was high time for studies but the sudden paint work has disturbed whole session,” a student of Chemistry Department, told KNS on the condition of anonymity. He said after announcement of NAAC team’s visit, there has been a sudden movement of workers in the University. “This is all done to gain points, but at the cost of studies. A month is lot of time for a student to study keenly but the so-called beautification of buildings has left us in the middle-of-nowhere,” he said. Even after a month, painting in other departments continues. The students alleged that it was the fear of NAAC survey that forced university authorities to paint the buildings. “It is because of the fear of the NAAC team that they are doing all this,” students alleged. They said that there was no harm in painting the buildings but it had to be done when academic session was over “No matter it is the beautification of the campus and it needs to be done. But the Way University authorities succumbed to the fear of survey is very unfortunate,” said a Pharmacy student. He said that there were many loopholes in the University policies. “Again university failed to cater to the students educationally. They are in a mood to gain points for buildings rather than studies,” he said. The students claimed that there was no room left for their consent. “All the things manipulated in University are authoritarian, we are never given a chance to express our views,” they alleged. “Our voice is unheard. We can not express ourselves,” they lamented. Sources told KNS that this ‘camouflage’ is being done to hide the failures of University authorities. “There is a huge scandal of backdoor appointments, illegal promotions and purchases without tenders in the University which has happened during the tenure of former Vice Chancellor, Prof Reyaz Punjabi. To hide its failures, the authorities are doing every cosmetic exercise which ranges from painting buildings, booking rooms for NAAC team members at tourist resorts and preparing for a grand feast on the day,” they said. “As some of the senior most officials of the KU are involved in scams, they don’t want to give any chance to NAAC members to report it,” they added. Sources told KNS that KU’s Directorate of Internal Quality and Assurance (DIQA) has issued a circular to all the departments to ensure attendance of students from July 17-22 during NAAC team’s visit. “All the head of departments have been asked to hold regular class work during the team’s visit. Why KU authorities are bothered about class work and studies only during these six days? It is unfortunate,” a senior professor told KNS, wishing not to be named. Registrar KU, Prof Syed Fayyaz defended paint work going on in the University. “There are marks for it in NAAC assessment. It should help us in getting a better score.” He denied that class work had suffered due to the painting work. “We are doing some kind of white wash and facelift in corridors. It won’t hamper class work,” he said. Regarding DIQA circular, the Registrar said, “The timing for faculty has been changed and it will be from 9 am to 5 pm during NAAC team’s visit. It has been done to give maximum to visiting team to interact with the faculty and the students,” he added.
