Show political will to resolve K-issue: Mufti to Indo-Pak | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Mendher, July 9 (KNS): Welcoming decisions taken in the recently held Foreign Secretary level talks between India and Pakistan, former Chief Minister and patron of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, today made it clear that involvement of the people of Jammu and Kashmir was must while formulating any roadmap for the resolution of Kashmir issue. “We welcomed the positive beginning made by Indo-Pak foreign secretaries and the leadership of both the countries will have to show political will to resolve the issue”, Sayeed said while addressing a public meeting at Mendhar. He, however, cautioned that sustainable peace in this region was not possible without involvement of people of Jammu and Kashmir in the process of solving the vexed Kashmir problem. Pointing towards political developments in neighboring country, Sayeed said that strengthening of the democracy in Pakistan would help in creating an atmosphere more conducive for the resolution of Kashmir problem and further accelerating the process of peace and reconciliation. He observed that the way democratic system has been strengthening in Pakistan is a positive development in the growth of democracy in the region and would create a sobering effect all over the sub-continent. “Strong and sustainable democracy in Pakistan is in the interest of the people of this sub-continent”, he said and referred towards the emergence of a strong civil society in Pakistan. He said that civil society in Pakistan has taken a stand both against military dictatorship and terrorism. “With the strengthening of democratic forces in Pakistan, it is easier to pursue the policy of reconciliation and dialogue,” he observed. Reiterating his stand that dialogue is the only way to restore lasting peace in this sub-continent, he stressed on the need of taking more Confidence Building Measures (CBM) to take the peace process-pioneered by the PDP, to the logical end. “The reconciliation and peace initiatives started after formation of PDP-Congress regime in the State is an irreversible process and there is no alternative to this process”, he said and added that Self Rule proposal of the party is one and only way to solve all problems. “Self Rule is a visionary document prepared to project political and economic rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir”, he said and added that this proposal has the potential to write a chapter of peace and development in this region. Former Chief Minister said that democracy in real sense was established in the State when PDP was formed on July 28, 1999 because this party has emerged as alternative to the National Conference which had ‘lost its credibility’ due its decades long mis-governance. “Presently there is no alternative of PDP in the State as our party has earned credibility of all sections of the society due to its convictions and commitments”, he said. “Although we had just 16 members in the previous Assembly, it was result of our conviction, commitment and credibility that the successive governments at Delhi had supported our peace initiatives”, he said. “What ever steps we had initiated for restoring peace, successive regimes at Delhi had endorsed our stand”, he said, adding, “previous NDA regime headed by Atal Behari Vajpayee and present UPA government led by Dr Manmohan Singh whole heartedly supported the initiatives taken by PDP regime for establishing sustainable peace in this region", he said. Responding to the demands of local people, Mufti strongly demanded that farmers whose land has been situated beyond the fencing on Line of Control (LoC) should not be harassed and be allowed to move freely in their fields. “We will effective take up issue on appropriate forums to stop harassment of the farmers”, he said. Sayeed also demanded that Tatapani point on LoC be also be opened for the movement of people and goods on both sides of border. “More and more points be opened on the LoC to facilitate movement of people across the LoC”, he demanded and expressed his concern over inordinate delay in taking decision on the applications of those who have applied for permission to visit other side of the LoC. The former Chief Minister regretted that Parnai project-which has potential to change socio-economic conditions of the people of this region, was still incomplete despite being the fact it was approved 30 years back. He emphasized on earlier completion of this project. MLA Mendhar Rafiq Hussain Khan, Murtaza Khan, MLC, Bharat Bhushan Gupta, Hussain Ali Bafa, Hamid Manhas, Imtiyaz Banday, Shahzad Khan, Nadeem Khan, Mohammed Azam, Haji Munshi, Aftab Taji, Haji Sadiq and others also addressed the meeting.
