Sports imperative to showcase talent: Omar

Drass (Kargil), July 9 (KNS): Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah Saturday said that sports events are imperative to provide opportunities to the local talent and showcase the potential of different games in the State.
Giving away prizes at the final of Lalit Polo Tournament at Drass this morning, the Chief Minister underlined the need for encouraging sports like Polo having potential and rich tradition in the State.
The Chief Minister said that sports are also means to attract players of national and international fame; promote tourism and give boost to the economic activities at one hand and develop the local potential on the other.
Omar appreciated the organizers for organizing the tournament at Drass, he said that it has showcased this beautiful area for tourism and sports. “Polo has been traditional sports in Leh, Kargil and other districts of the State”, he said adding that the steps aimed at giving fillip to this game would be encouraged by the government.
“We are determined to develop sports and sports culture in the State and encourage young sports persons to excel and prove their talent at the national and international levels”, he said and referred to various measures government has initiated for the growth of the sports in the State.
As many as eight teams participated in the tournament organized by the Lalit Group of Hotels. The final was played between Drass Polo team and Lalit Grop Polo team. Lalit Group Polo team won the final by beating Drass Polo team by 4 points to 7.
Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hassam Mir, Minister for Higher Education, Abdul Gani Malik, and Minister for CAPD, Qamar Ali Akhoon and large number of locals and visitors witnessed the thrilling match in which fortunes fluctuated between the two teams throughout the game. While the first half was dominated by Drass Polo team, the second half was conquered by Lalit Group Polo team.
