Healthy J&K should be fundamental mission of doctors: Omar
GMC celebrates Golden Jubilee

Srinagar, July 09 – Reminding medical fraternity of their fundamental mission to serve the society in best possible way, Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah Saturday said that the government and doctors are equal partners in the stupendous task of providing quality and required medicare to the people.
“While government is providing adequate infrastructure, medicines, gadgets and modern trainings to the doctors and students, they have to render the quality service with a missionary zeal”, he said referring to the reluctance of doctors to serve in difficult and less optimal areas. He said they are more committed to the society than to anyone as such they have to shoulder this responsibility happily and as a challenge.
Speaking at the Golden Jubilee Celebration function of Government Medical College, Srinagar here this afternoon; the Chief Minister said that the progress and development of a society is directly dependent on the status and degree of healthcare service available to the people.
“How much progressive we may be in the sectors of power, communication, industries, agriculture, etc, but at the end of the day the real indicator of development and growth is the quality of health service available to the people”, he added saying that the quality of healthcare depends upon the quality of doctors.
The Chief Minister said that during the last 50 years Government Medical College (GMC) has produced eminent doctors of world fame. “The doctors from this institution have not only made their mark in the State but their ability and caliber has become benchmark in North, East, West and South of the globe”, he said stressing on continuation of this trend by GMC.
Omar Abdullah said that Srinagar Medical College has seen the best as well as the worst periods but it has shown good performance and thrived with the progress of time. “You have not to rest here. The world of medical sciences is confronted with huge challenges. New diseases and variations in diseases surface day-to-day, new technology emerges day after day, new drugs and medicines are introduced continuously to address the diseases and treat these in a befitting and proper manner”, he said and asked the doctors to keep pace with the pace of development in medical sciences in the world.
The Chief Minister said that his government would provide all possible assistance to the medical colleges and health institutions to grow and develop as per the modern requirements. “Our duty is to equip you better and provide you all possible facilities of teaching and faculty, you have to deliver in the shape of best quality service to the people”, he told the doctors and students saying that government, doctors and students are the three important players of a joint mission to make Jammu and Kashmir a healthy, happy and a prosperous State.
The Chief Minister wished growth, development and excellence to the college and expressed the hope that the next 50 years of the college would be more productive to achieve the pinnacles.
Minister for Medical Education, R. S. Chib and Minister of State for Health and Medical Education, Javid Ahmad Dar in their speeches highlighted the role of GMC, Srinagar in producing eminent doctors and providing best service to the people.
Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hassan Mir, legislators, Dr, Mustafa Kamal, Dr. Shafi, erstwhile Principals of the Medical College, faculty members, students and others were present on the occasion. Commissioner Secretary Health and Medical Education, G. A. Peer presented vote of thanks on the occasion.
In a PowerPoint presentation, the Principal Medical College, Srinagar, Dr. Shahida Mir said that the institution was actually started in the year 1959 at Amira Kadal Dispensary along the bank of river Jehlum with Col. GVS Murti as its first Principal and GMC was established at present place in year 1961.
Narrating its growth and development she said presently eight hospitals of SMHS, LDH, B&J, GBP, CD, Psych, Chitranjan, and SPM are associated with GMC, Srinagar and all these serve as main territory care referral hospitals for entire Valley. “It also has a AMT school and a Nursing College under its umbrella. The bed strength is more than 2300 which is likely to increase further with the additional blocks at B&J, LD and Institute of Traumatology”, she said adding that 4000 MBBS doctors, 1800 Post Graduates and 7000 para medix have been produced by the Medical College so far.
The Principal said that for providing work power to GMC, Jammu, SKIMS, Soura, Jehlum Valley Medical College, Srinagar, ASCOMS, Jammu and most of the leading hospitals of India the GMC, Srinagar is called ‘the Mother Institution’. She said that about 1.2 million patients are being annually treated by the institution and its associate hospitals while these conduct 40000 to 50000 major and 60000 to 70000 minor operations annually.
Dr. Mir also gave resume of the growth and development of the institution during last two to three years adding that three of PG Departments namely Dermatology, Pediatrics and Ophthalmology were PG was going on for the last 20 years were recognized by MCI last year and PG Diploma in Gynae and anaesthesia is in process of getting recognized.
